Dental emergencies can catch us off guard, causing pain and discomfort that requires immediate attention. Knowing how to handle these situations can make all the difference, saving you from intense pain and life-threatening dental infections.
Let’s explore the five most common dental emergencies we’ve noticed over the many years, and the steps you can take to manage them effectively.
1. Toothaches that won’t quit
Various factors, including tooth decay, infection, or a damaged tooth, can cause a sudden, throbbing toothache. When you get a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris. Place a cold compress against the affected area to reduce any inflammation. While over-the-counter pain relievers may provide temporary relief, it’s important to contact our dentist ASAP to root out the underlying cause of your toothache and prevent further issues.
2. Knocked out tooth
If your tooth gets knocked out, you can still save it if you act quickly. Hold it by the crown (the top part of your tooth) and rinse it gently with water if dirty. However, avoid scrubbing or removing any tissue fragments. If possible, try to replace the tooth back into its socket. If not, keep it in milk or saliva and head over to our dental clinic within 30 minutes for the best chance of successful reattachment.
3. Cracked or chipped tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress against the affected area outside your mouth to reduce swelling. Then, make your way over to our dentist to determine the extent of the damage and the best treatment for it. We may recommend bonding, veneers or crowns depending on your individual case.
4. Lost filling or crown
A lost filling or crown can expose sensitive parts of your tooth and cause discomfort. While waiting for your emergency dental appointment with us, apply a small amount of toothpaste to help cover the area temporarily, providing you some relief.
5. Abscesses: Swelling and pain
An abscess is an infection that often causes swelling around the affected area, intense pain and sometimes even fever. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water and reach out to our dentist. Don’t ignore these signs because an untreated abscess is a sign of a severe infection that can lead to serious complications.
Keep in mind that while we can’t predict when these dental emergencies will happen, you can prevent some by practising good oral hygiene and wearing mouthguards during sports or other activities that might put your teeth at risk. At the same time, having an emergency dental kit like gauze, dental wax, and the contact info of our dentist can save the day.
Your teeth are a vital part of your smile and overall well-being, so don’t hesitate to reach out to our dental team whenever you’re in doubt and pain.
