What Causes Tooth Staining?
The enamel is the outer layer of your tooth. The colour of your teeth is provided naturally by the scattering and reflection of light off your enamel in combination with dentin’s colour (which is located under the enamel).
It’s quite natural to experience tooth discolouration and staining throughout the course of your life. Your teeth could pick up stains due to your oral hygiene routines, and the things you eat and drink on a daily basis.
Common causes of stains and discolouration are:
Use of tobacco
Drinking red wine, cola, coffee, and tea
Poor oral hygiene
Too much fluoride exposure
Moreover, aging and genetics can also lead to discolouration. With age, the dentin becomes dark and the enamel thin, which causes teeth to look yellow.
Regular brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist can help keep those stains at bay. And if you’re looking for that extra boost, professional teeth whitening can significantly help get your smile back to its radiant charm.
Understanding the specific cause of tooth stains or discolouration can help determine the most suitable treatment for your unique condition. Schedule a consultation with one of our experienced dentists today!
Benefits Of Professional Teeth Whitening
Here’s why you should get your teeth professionally whitened:
Enhanced appearance: Professional teeth whitening effectively removes stubborn stains and discolouration from teeth, resulting in a brighter and more attractive smile.
Safe and effective: When performed by our qualified dental professionals, teeth whitening treatments are safe and reliable. Our dentists use professional-grade whitening agents that are stronger, safer and more effective than over-the-counter products, ensuring optimal results without compromising your oral health.
Customised treatment: Our dental professionals can tailor your teeth whitening treatment to meet your individual needs and preferences. We have a solution for every smile at Warrnambool Smile Dental.
Long-lasting results: Professional teeth whitening typically provides longer-lasting results compared to over-the-counter alternatives.
Comprehensive oral health assessment: Our dentists perform a comprehensive oral health examination. This allows us to identify any underlying dental issues and address them before starting your whitening treatment so you can have both a healthier and brighter smile.
Boost in self-confidence: A brighter, whiter smile can significantly boost your self-confidence and self-esteem. It can help you feel more comfortable when out and about, positively impacting your overall quality of life.
Instant shine: You won’t be waiting around for weeks. A single session can leave you with a noticeably brighter smile in no time.
No sensitivity worries: Our dentist knows which treatments to recommend to minimise any sensitivity. So, you can get that sparkle without discomfort.
Even whitening: Our dentists ensure that the whitening solution is distributed evenly across all your teeth, preventing patchiness or uneven colouration.
Quick and non-invasive: Professional teeth whitening is relatively fast and non-invasive and can deliver noticeable results.
Our Teeth Whitening Process
Your treatment begins with a thorough dental examination to check for potential dental problems such as cracks, gum disease, and tooth decay. If you have any dental problems, the teeth whitening process may be delayed until it is addressed and treated as the bleach used during teeth whitening can cause varying degrees of teeth irritation.
However, if no dental problem is identified, our dentist will give you a prophylactic cleaning. This cleaning helps prep the teeth by clearing away plaque collected between the teeth and on the surface. Furthermore, it helps establish the enamel’s base colour.
Next, our dentist will take photos of your teeth and measure their colour on the shade guide. It provides a benchmark for progress assessment. Once complete, your teeth whitening process begins!
We will use a cheek retractor inside the mouth to help expose the teeth visible while smiling, also known as the aesthetic zone. After that, our dentist will paint a hardening resin or liquid rubber onto your gum tissue. This helps protect against the irritation that the bleaching gel may cause.
The bleaching gel contains hydrogen peroxide. It is applied on the teeth in the aesthetic zone and kept for 15 to 30 minutes, and then washed off. After that, more fresh gel is used. It is applied for an additional period of 30 minutes. Intense light may be incorporated as needed to activate the bleaching process. Our dentist will check your teeth between bleaching gel applications to determine the difference, results, and whether more bleach is required.
After the procedure, our dentist will remove the retractors. You will rinse and immediately after, our dentist will measure the change of shade. Your teeth will become two or three shades lighter in just one session!

The results of Teeth Whitening can last for several months to a year. The best way to maintain the results is to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, etc. You should also brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Please also keep in mind that follow-up whitening appointments with our dentist will be required to keep the results consistent and your smile bright!
Our in-office teeth whitening treatment typically takes around 1-2 hours to achieve significant results. It’s important to note that the actual time it takes to whiten teeth can vary depending on the level of discolouration, the desired results, and your individual response to the whitening treatment. It’s best to consult with our dental professional to get a more accurate estimate of the expected time frame for your specific case.
While the treatment may cause some sensitivity and mild discomfort to the teeth and gums, this is fleeting and our patients have reported little to no pain during the process. Our team of experienced dentists will make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your entire visit.
In-office teeth whitening is performed by our experienced dental professionals at our clinic. It involves the application of a higher concentration of whitening agents to safely and effectively whiten your smile in just a single visit.
Take-home whitening kits offer the convenience of being able to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. The kits include custom-fitted trays and whitening gel.
While they can help remove surface stains, they are not as effective as our in-office professional teeth whitening treatments. The lower concentration of whitening agents and the one size fits all approach of these may limit their ability to address more stubborn or deeper stains. The quality of the ingredients used in these kits also means that they might not be a safe alternative for everyone.
Of course! You can still enjoy your coffee and wine but moderation is key. After teeth whitening, it’s best to be a bit more mindful of what you consume for the first couple of days. Your teeth might still be sensitive so you may want to hold off on those staining drinks for a short while if you want the results from your treatment to last longer.
We also recommend drinking and rinsing your mouth out with water when consuming any staining foods to reduce the risk of stains settling on your teeth.
Stick to your oral hygiene routine. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. This helps prevent new stains from settling in.
If you’re sipping on staining beverages, using a straw can help minimise contact with your teeth. If you’re a smoker, quitting can do wonders for your new smile’s longevity as smoking can hinder your whitening efforts.
Make sure to keep attending regular dental check-ups every 6 months. Our dentists can spot early signs of staining and help keep your smile in top shape.
After teeth whitening, some individuals may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. It is natural and often mild and short-lived. Our dentist will ensure any discomfort that may arise is alleviated.
Using over-the-counter products may lead to uneven whitening, increased tooth sensitivity and potential misuse risks. Consulting one of our experienced dentists is much safer and provides effective results that you don’t have to worry about.
Unfortunately, teeth whitening treatments don’t work on dental restorations like crowns or fillings. It is recommended to get the whitening done before getting dental work done to match the colour of your restorations.
When done professionally, teeth whitening shouldn’t damage enamel. The whitening agents used are designed to be safe for your teeth.
