For patients who are conscious of their amalgam (mercury fillings), we are able to remove them safely and replace them with tooth coloured composite or ceramic restorations. These days, we only use amalgam fillings only if there is no other alternative, but in the past most fillings were done in amalgam fillings. It is now known that amalgam fillings can cause cracks to propagate in teeth and lead to cracking and fracturing of teeth, which will require extensive treatments or extraction. By replacing these amalgam fillings with treatment options that prevent cracks from getting worse, we can often avoid these adverse outcomes.
